A Fold Apart
Lightning Rod Games’ A Fold Apart is an adorable puzzle game that explores the ins and outs of being in a long-distance relationship, through the visuals of paper-crafted puzzles. With over fifty hand-crafted levels, you’ll delve deep into the nuances of this couple’s relationship.
When the game begins, you can choose from a few different couples, with differing gender-roles to allow you to pick the relationship that best represents you. The two characters; an Architect who gets a once-in-a-lifetime job opportunity that they must move away to the city for; and their partner, a Teacher who must remain at home, must work together from afar to navigate this complex and emotional world.
The core mechanic of A Fold Apart is of course the paper. Folding and unfolding paper, and flipping it over to solve each puzzle seems like a straightforward task, but can easily leave you confused. This all represents the problems of miscommunication, and how quickly problems can arise through things as simple as misjudging the tone in a text message. It can be a bit complicated at times trying to figure out just what you need to do to solve each puzzle, but through retracing your steps and re-folding the paper back to the beginning again, you can keep trying it again and again to find what works best.
The art style of A Fold Apart fits perfectly, with the world being entirely paper-craft in appearance, and absolutely adorable throughout. Similarly, the music is fantastic, with a delightful soundtrack by Riley Koenig, that perfectly encapsulates the emotion of the game.
Priced at £16.99 on the Switch eShop, A Fold Apart seems a little pricier than many of the other puzzle games we’ve played, particularly when the six chapters can be completed in around 2-3 hours, but the quality and deep, interesting story kept me interested, and wanting the best for this little couple I was in control of.
In the end, we decided to give A Fold Apart the Collecting Asylum rating of 7.5/10.
