Suicide Guy
First impressions matter, which can be a bit of a challenge when you’ve got a game called Suicide Guy. In it you play as the titular, nameless guy - or maybe his name actually is Guy? - who falls asleep only to repeatedly get trapped in a variety of weird dreams, and the only way to wake up is to die. Seems easy enough, right? But in these dreams it is surprisingly hard to die, leaving only one obscure solution for Guy’s awakening. Throughout the twenty-five levels, you’ll be led through a whole bunch of his bizarre dreams, with plenty of out of the box and creative deaths required for success.
Some of the puzzle ideas are very inventive, and by that I mean absolutely bonkers. What might work in one level, such as electricity, might not work in the next - even if you think it would make sense. The levels are mostly straightforward, and won’t take too long to get through, but there are a couple that left us scratching our heads for a bit.
Visually, it’s decent enough. The art style is very simple, in a sort of 3D cartoon style, with some levels referencing other well-known games. There’s a hidden collectible to find in each of the levels, which encourages you to explore the scenery a little, but often these are beyond simple to find.
The controls are frustrating, as the platforming elements feel way too clunky and this can cause a lot of issues with your precision - whether that is for jumping or dropping items. There’s no sense of urgency in the game, which does make things a tad boring at times, but conversely is also a blessing for when you’re struggling with the controls and a major threat would be the end of you (although… that’s kinda the point here!).
Priced at £7.19 on the Switch eShop, it’s cheap - but a bit underwhelming compared to similarly priced titles. If you’re looking to give Suicide Guy a go, I would suggest waiting for a sale before you jump in.
In the end, we decided to give Suicide Guy the Collecting Asylum rating of 5/10.
