Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry

Leisure Suit Larry was always one of those characters that I’d heard of, but never actually played any of the games. Allan, on the other hand, grew up having played multiple titles and remembers the hilariously over-the-top innuendo-filled series fondly.

Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry is the first title developed by CrazyBunch, and is the first title returning to the titular protagonist since the 2013 remake of the original. Finally entering the 21st Century, Larry finds himself out of touch, being away from the dating game for 30 years and not having experienced any of the new technology at his disposal. As with the previous titles, LSL:WDDD is a point and click adventure game filled to the brim with hilarious dialogue and an amazingly wild art-style.

Larry will work his way through different locations, trying to find out exactly what he’s missed out on all these years. Through a combination of dialogue with NPCs and interacting with objects within a scene, Larry will slowly start to piece things together. This is something that has actually been done really well, with a believable yet humorous take on someone adjusting to life in the 21st Century. The art-style is an interesting blend of grotesque and gorgeous, with completely hand-drawn scenes filled with beautiful colours, but also made up of a variety of complete filth - in both senses of the word!

Many of the locations available to you are full of subtle and not-so-subtle nods to pop culture references, as well as various phallic imagery. It’s a very fun game at its core, despite the simple premise of being a point and click. It’s all about getting those laughs. Voice acting has been done really well throughout, with original voice actor Jan Rabson returning for the role. Only one game in the series has saw another actor play the title role (which has changed between Larry Laffer and his nephew Larry Lovage on occasion), and that was 2009’s Box Office Bust, where Larry Lovage was played by none other than Jeffrey Tambor (something I definitely couldn’t have told you without seeing it!)

Controls take a little bit of getting used to, as you have to almost scroll through the available clickable options due to the game’s point-and-click style (which are obviously favoured towards a keyboard and mouse setup) but once you get the hang of things it’s actually not too bad. Ensuring that you go through all available options so as to not miss anything important. The story is very well thought out, with various puzzles requiring completion to progress. Sometimes you’ll think you’ve found the correct option, but haven’t quite figured out how to achieve said option, so it can take a little going back and forward through things to get there.

Right from the get-go you are given a series of questions to determine if you’re old enough to play the game, which was pretty fun. We’re almost thirty though, and struggled to get through some of them due to the questions revolving around pop-culture things that we knew nothing about. Sorry! We haven’t watched Star Trek! Luckily, the questions refresh after every failed attempt, so after a few embarrassing failures we ended up with a question about Twin Peaks, followed by correctly answering Larry’s surname - so we got there in the end! Technically we could have just looked for the answers online, but it was fun to see how many tries it would take to start without doing that.

It’s an interesting game, with a lot of fun to be had but I can’t help but feel like the price is just a bit too high. Priced at £33.49 on Xbox One, you could get a few amazing indie titles for the same amount, so it feels like it’s asking a bit much. We certainly enjoyed our time playing, so if you see it on offer, I would highly recommend picking it up if you like these kinds of games.

In the end, we decided to give Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry the Collecting Asylum rating of 7/10.
