Monster Blast [Switch]

EntwicklerX’s Monster Blast is an arcadey shooter where you play as a big, hulking dude with guns, whose job it is to blast monsters. You’ve got 24 levels spanning four different worlds, and here you must face off against a variety of different monsters with varied abilities. There’s not a lot to say about the gameplay, in all honesty. It’s very standard fare, with monsters closing in on you, as you desperately try to defend yourself.

The colour palette of Monster Blast is visually appealing, with plenty of variation in the look of each different area of the game. Everything has a very blocky appearance, albeit softer with much rounder edges than the likes of Minecraft. This gives it all, including the enemies, an almost cute appearance, with very smooth, play-doh like visuals.

The sound design is funky, with decent music - although this ends up heavily peppered with the loud, repetitive blasts of your gun. Enemies make a slight popping sound upon defeat, and you’ll also have the jingling of coins when you gather them, but oddly the enemies themselves don’t seem to make any noise, instead just looming ever forward until they inevitably die. There is a classic sounding announcer voice whenever you get a Game Over, but there doesn’t seem to be very much ‘life’ within the levels themselves.

Being a twin-stick shooter, we were keen to see how this felt to play - and whilst it’s not bad, it’s not great either. The gameplay loop quickly becomes quite bland, as enemy AI isn’t hard to deal with at all. The enemies do vary as you progress, with new types being introduced, but even these are easy to decipher and are not difficult to deal with - even the bosses, which is a shame really.

Priced at £7.19 on the Switch eShop, it’s surprisingly expensive for such a bare-bones game, and being on Nintendo Switch, it’s not even got the benefit of being a quick and easy title for achievement hunters to complete - although it does have an Xbox release, so that might be better for you if that’s your preference!

In the end, we decided to give Monster Blast the Collecting Asylum rating of 6/10.
